Peat spades

Tørvegravning

Illustration Niels Bach

Through time, many peat spades from the Iron Age have been found in Danish bogs. In general, there are two types: A T-shaped peat spade, presumably used for cutting the peat, and a double spade, which was probably used as a common digging tool that was used everywhere, also in the bogs. Perhaps they were used for clearing the surface in order to get to the peat.
