Tollund Man’s stomach contents have been preserved in alcohol in this old jam jar since 1950. Photo Museum Silkeborg.

In May 2016, we collected a small sample of Tollund Man’s stomach contents in order to see whether his last meal contained meat or something else of animal origin – cheese or the like. Seeds of 29 different plant species were found and the meal appears purely vegetarian – probably in the form of porridge or gruel. By investigating the proteins or protein parts in the contents, it will also be possible to determine if meat was present, even if it is completely decomposed by now. It will even be possible to determine from which species the meat originates. Therefore we eagerly await the analysis results from Aarhus University.
